We haven't had a Puerto Rican restaurant in Indy for awhile and I was so excited when a friend told me they'd heard about El Coqui from a friend of a friend.

First of all, it's no where you'd normally be passing- you'll have to look for it and go with purpose. Second of all, it's fairly priced and the menu is varied (& hand written on a chalkboard!). Third of all, it seems to be family owned (my impression anyway).

We tried several things and everything was delicious. I had the mofongo with pork but immediately wished I'd ordered shrimp when i saw my friends dish! We also had an appetizer from the case at the counter and some drinks.

The place is deceiving from the outside (I grew a little concerned stepping over dirty diapers on the street haha) but inside is super cute! Park on the street (it's primarily residential) and prepare for it to be hot. It could have just been the day I was there but it was 95° outside and that felt cooler (because of the slight breeze) than the restaurant. I was literally dripping sweat and had to get a napkin to wipe my forehead constantly. I guess another option is ordering to-go!

Anyway, I will definitely be back and have already recommended it to several friends- I hope El Coqui is very successful!

The food is delicious. Great Puerto Rican food with a East Coast vibe to it! I would reccomend!

Good food. They speak English and Spanish. I'll be back. Thanks to my coworkers for bringing me for the first time.

As a Puerto Rican, I am overly critical of Puerto Rican restaurants (since I grew up in a home where all we cooked is Rican). However, El Coqui hits every single spot I ever have when I am craving my people's cuisine. Everything is fresh, seasoned and cooked so incredibly well. The owners are the friendliest people ever. It feels like home every time I go. I personally love all the fritura options plus the general entree.  I absolutely LOVE this place and hope that they continue to thrive.

The food was incredible!! Tried a variety of sides and meats. The place was initially hard to find, but had great parking. Limited seating inside, but they also do takeout if the place is full.
